I have always been drawn to voyages along roads, and especially the innocence of a
sustained gaze out a moving window. For me, the landscape becomes a character, alive and
shifting in personality and story. When I first arrived in Iran, I spent one month driving
through the landscapes of the south where my father is from. What I saw mesmerized me
and sent me into a dream which slowly became the seeds for a "road movie."
In the landscape, I saw history- my father's, grandfather's, and Iran's- saturated with
countless lives, stories and origins. I began to see my characters and their personal
journeys
vis-a-vis this geography. I returned to the south during all four seasons, localizing my
explorations to Shiraz and the surrounding vicinity, in search of landscapes that spoke
with
me, but more importantly that spoke with my story. I was gripped by what I found, and
during filming had the audacity to drag my crew over three hundred kilometers for one
shot.
I had no choice. That is the power of what Iran's landscape whispered to me.
