News ANNOUNCING: Call For Papers For PresentationIranian Alliances Across Borders (IAAB) is presenting its Second International Conference on the Iranian Diaspora, April 23-24, 2005 at the University of Maryland, College Park. IAAB was established in 2003 by students at Wellesley College and Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts. It is a non-partisan, non-profit organization that addresses issues of the Iranian diaspora by facilitating community building, developing ways to better understand what it means to be part of a diaspora community, and helping members of the Iranian diaspora community enhance connections with their new communities as well as maintain connections with their root community. Through this conference we hope to address the current conditions and circumstances of the Iranian diaspora through a series of lectures and panels. Through these lectures, as well as supplementary cultural events, we look to provide an open and supportive environment for productive and interactive discussions about the Iranian diaspora. During this two-day conference, we will also provide space for artists of the Iranian diaspora community to exhibit their work. The desired
outcome of this conference is to illuminate issues faced by the Iranian
diaspora community, and to build a stronger network of Iranians across
national borders. Submissions are
encouraged in, but not limited to, the following areas: 1) The definition and significance of a diaspora community; 2) The issue of language study in the formation of identity;3) The economic, sociological, and psychological trends in the Iranian diaspora;4) Issues facing second-generation Iranians;5) The issues faced by ethnic and religious minority Iranians;6) The growing influence of Iranians in their communities abroad;7) Field-work or case-studies of specific Iranian diasporic communities. We will also have a panel of second-generation Iranians in the diaspora who will speak about various aspects of their experiences. We encourage you to submit narrative and personal stories if you are interested in participating in this panel.
